Motorhome & Caravan Insurance Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions
Make sure the vehicle is safe and secure, then take plenty of photos of the damage before anything is moved or cleaned up — your insurer will want these. Contact your insurance company to lodge a claim, then get in touch with us as early as possible. Dan and the team can assess the damage, prepare a repair quote for your insurer, and guide you through the next steps — often a quick phone call is all it takes to know exactly where you stand.
Yes. In New Zealand, most insurance policies allow you to nominate your preferred repairer. Motorhomes and caravans are specialist vehicles — the construction, joinery, and composite panels are nothing like a standard car — so it pays to choose a repairer who builds and repairs them every day. Simply tell your insurer you’d like Platinum Motorhomes to carry out the repair, then give Dan a call and we’ll take it from there.
Yes. We regularly work with insurers and their assessors on motorhome and caravan claims. Once your claim is lodged, Dan and the team liaise directly with your insurance company — providing the damage assessment, photos, and repair quote — so you’re not stuck playing middleman. If you’d like us to handle your claim, get in touch and we’ll get things moving.
Platinum Motorhomes is an approved repairer for many of New Zealand’s leading motorhome and caravan insurers, including:
- AA Insurance
- AIG
- COVI
- Camper Care
- Lumley Insurance
- NZI
- Star Insurance
- State
If your insurer isn’t listed, don’t worry — most policies still allow you to nominate your preferred repairer. Just let your insurer know you’d like Platinum Motorhomes to do the work, then give Dan and the team a call and we’ll sort the rest.
We handle the full range of motorhome, campervan, and caravan insurance repairs, including:
- Accident and collision damage
- Fibreglass and composite panel repairs
- Water ingress and leak damage
- Storm, hail, and falling-object damage
- Awning, hatch, and window damage
- Interior repairs, including our trademark wooden joinery
- Structural steelwork repairs
- Full or partial repaints
Because we design and build motorhomes ourselves, we can repair damage other workshops can’t — right down to matching custom interior joinery. Not sure if your damage is on the list? Send Dan a few photos and he’ll tell you straight away whether it’s something we can help with (it usually is).
Yes — this is one of our specialties. Our team comes from a custom boat-building background, with decades of experience in fibreglass and composite construction. We build our own fibreglass composite motorhomes (the Endeavour and the Origin), so we understand exactly how these panels are constructed and how to repair them properly, not just patch them. If your motorhome has composite panel damage, talk to Dan before anyone takes a grinder to it — you’ll be glad you did.
- Lodge your claim with your insurer and let them know you’d like Platinum Motorhomes as your repairer.
- Assessment — bring your motorhome to us (or send Dan photos initially) so we can inspect the damage.
- Quote — we prepare a detailed repair quote and submit it to your insurer or their assessor.
- Approval — once the insurer approves the claim, we book your repair in.
- Repair — the team carries out the work to C.O.F. standard.
- Handover — you pay your excess (if applicable), we invoice the insurer for the balance, and you’re back on the road.
Every claim is a little different, so if you’re unsure where you’re at in the process, just pick up the phone — Dan will happily walk you through it.
Usually just your policy excess, which is set out in your insurance policy. This is typically paid to us when you collect your vehicle, and we invoice your insurer directly for the remainder. If any part of the work isn’t covered by your claim, Dan will let you know before we start — no surprises. Any questions about costs or your excess, just ask when you get in touch.
It’s not uncommon — particularly with water damage — for the full extent of the problem to only become visible once panels or linings are removed. If that happens, we document the additional damage and submit a variation to your insurer for approval before carrying on. Dan and the team will keep you in the loop the whole way, so you’re never left wondering what’s happening with your motorhome.
It depends on your policy. Sudden water damage (for example, from storm damage or an accident) is usually covered, but gradual water ingress from a long-term leak often isn’t. We recommend checking your policy wording or asking your insurer. Either way, leaks and water damage are among the most common problems we fix — bring your motorhome in and Dan will assess the damage and tell you honestly what we find, whether it’s a claim or not.
It depends on the extent of the damage, insurer approval times, and parts availability. Minor panel or awning repairs may only take a few days, while major structural or water damage repairs can take several weeks. Once Dan has assessed your vehicle and the claim is approved, we’ll give you a realistic timeframe — and keep you updated if anything changes. The sooner you get in touch, the sooner we can get you booked in.
Yes. All our work is carried out to C.O.F. standard by qualified tradesmen, so your motorhome remains fully compliant and roadworthy after the repair. If you have questions about compliance or certification, Dan and the team are happy to talk it through.
Yes, all our repair work is backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Ask Dan about our guarantee when you book your repair.
